Conner and I went on a hike to Totem Rock in the Patoka Lake State Park in November of 2015. He was 8 getting ready to turn 9 at the time. It was a very enjoyable hike. It was one of the longest he has done. It was around 3.5 miles total, but he didn't really complain. It is part of the longer 6.5 mile Patoka Lake Main Hiking Trail. With it being deep into fall most of the leaves were off the trees covering the trail. It was very hard to see the trail at times, but there were enough makers to find your way. There are a hand full of signs, but red dots on the trees every so often. Along this trail is a little hilly, but not too bad. There are some rock outcrops along the way. We hiked back to Totem Rock. It is a large rock shelter that was used by Native Americans and early settlers. He thought it was really cool. There was even a break in between the main rock and another huge rock that we were able to climb between. After exploring Totem Rock we took a little shortcut to an access road that leads you back to the Visitors Center. Along the road we found a couple of old survey bench marks he liked. Also along the road, right before the parking lot, there is the old Moery Cabin. This cabin was were Jacob Moery and his family lived in the late 1800's. The front doors were locked, but the back door was open, so we went in and checked it out.
This was an excellent hike for Conner. Pushed him a little on distance, but there was enough to see and explore to keep him happy. I would rate this hike as moderate to rugged. And kid over 6 could do this hike if they are able to go that far.
