The boys and I went on a hike to the fire tower of the Ferdinand State Forest in February of 2016. Conner was 9 and Maddox was 4 getting ready to turn 5. Since it was still winter, but a very nice day, all the leaves were off the trees. The trail was pretty easy to follow. Their were a few places it was totally covered in leaves making it had to see. We walked the road to the trail, which wasn't marked very well. Once in the woods there is a trailhead marker to the fire tower. The trail starts out at a higher elevation, but there is a big hill that leads you down to a creek. From here it is up and down and along the sides of hills. It is 1.5 miles from the trailhead to the fire tower. The actual trail leads to a road but to your left you will see the trail leading up to the fire tower. You can climb the fire tower all the way to the top landing, but cannot go into the very top. Once we left the fire tower we just followed the rock road back to the truck. It was a very nice hike. It felt a little longer than 3 miles, because of the hills.
