Conner's Photo Gallery Taken On Firetower Trail Hike
The boys and I went on this hike on a nice day in January 2015. Conner was 8 and Maddox was almost 4. It was a real fun hike for the boys. It was a fairly easy 2.5 mile out and back. Conner was still on his hunt to find Bigfoot. The trail starts at the old firetower located in the Pike State Forest near Winslow Indiana. From the firetower parking lot there is a firelane/access road leading out into the forest. It was real easy walking down the road. About 3/4 of a mile or so you will find the Old Corn Cemetery. The boys really enjoyed seeing the old tombstones. They really liked it when I told them the story I heard as a teenager. The story goes that Mary Corn was a witch. You can find her tombstone still there, and it dates back to the 1700s. The story I was told is that you can light a black candle above her tombstone, and it does not matter if it is windy or not, the flame will go out instantly. I tried it as a kid and it never worked.
On past the cemetery there are 2 access gates. One is straight ahead and the other goes to the left. We first went straight and it leads to a little clearing with a small trail leading into the forest. We followed it for a while, but it got to muddy. We then went back to the other gate and went down that road. We followed that trail all the way to the Patoka River. They really enjoyed checking out the river and the trail loop back around at the river and you can head back. I would suggest this trail for kids of any age. Easy walking and things to see. And if you have horses there are lots of horse trails in the Pike State Forest.
