Conner's Photo Gallery Taken On Indian Hills Trail
The boys and I hiked the Indian Hill Trail on a nice day in February 2015. Conner was 8 and Maddox was almost 4 at the time. The Indian Hill Trail is a new trail that was established in the spring of 2014 in the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge located in the Sycamore Land Trust. It is located near the Pike/Gibson border just East of Oakland City near the Old Columbia Mine. This trail was great for the boys, lots to see and easy walking. It was only 1.25 miles (1.5 miles if you take the connector). There are 3 water bodies located on this trail Paddelfish Pond, Indian Hill Lake, & The Patoka River. Also on the East side of the lake is a possible indian mound that the trail actually goes on top of. There is also a connector trail that goes in between the pond and lake to the top of the mound. We did not do the connector we just finished the loop. It is pretty flat walking with only two big hills on the trail (one being the indian mound). From the hills you get great views of the area and the lake. The trail is very easy to follow and stay on. There are a few trail arrow signs along the way. The start/finish are old roads, most of the rest of the trail is man made threw old field, and on the mound the trail is marked by ribbon through the woods. On the back side of the lake dam is the Patoka River. Also on the dam is a wooden bridge you must cross. I would suggest this trail to any one with small kids. It is easy walking with lots to look at. Another nice thing about it is there are No Hunting Signs along the trail. I always feel much better with the boys when I see these outside of a state park.
