The boys and I along with one my friends hiked the Massey Lake Trail along with the Copperbelly Trail in September of 2015. Conner was 8 at the time and Maddox was 4. The Copperbelly/Massey Lake trail is in the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge located in the Sycamore Land Trust. It is located near the Pike/Gibson border just East of Oakland City near the Old Columbia Mine. This trail was easy hiking, but a little grown over. Even though it was grown up, it was pretty well marked with signs and arrows. You start on the Copperbelly Trail and within a few yards you turn North onto the Massey Lake Trail. You pass by the Laura Hare Lake and the Mountain Mint Meadow. To me the Meadow was more like a marsh. Once you get Massey Lake their is a side trail that leads down to a little finger on the lake. It is cleared out with a nice view of the lake. You then back track to the main trail and follow it to Copperbelly Trail and back to the trailhead. It was pretty hot the day we went so the boys didn't enjoy it a whole lot. Do to the fact it was grown up, it made it hard to see too much. All in all it was a real great hike, but Massey Lake is very nice. It would probably be better in the spring when the weeds are lower and you can see more.
It would be a fairly easy hike for kids of most ages.
