Conner and I went hiking here in June of 2014. He was 7 at the time. We had done this trail once before 2011 when he was 4. This happens to be the trail that I learned that just because it is only 2.8 miles, the change in elevation makes a big difference on how far they can go. Grotto Falls is a great trail and beautiful waterfall. It is the only waterfall in the Smokies that you can actually go behind. The elevation change makes it a little difficult for smaller children. Besides being really hilly and steep in places, it is also rocky in spots and a lot of roots along the trail to trip over. The trail is very busy, so if you go get there early so you can park. The parking lot fills up very fast. It is a great trail for kids over 5 I would say. I did see some smaller kids than that on the trail when we were there.
